Getting to know your guitar's fretboard...

All systems, whether social or scientific, respond to certain rules.  Can the rules be broken?  All the time!  We see this happening everyday in real life and in real time.  The same issue happens musically. We may learn some principles along the way of our musical journey as students, and perhaps this can even lead to some rules we create for ourselves.  Sometimes the rules are given to us. However, thanks to some that broke a lot of the rules regarding music composition, we have things like pop music, jazz, hip hop, and even some forms of classical music.  However, getting some music theory principles knowledge usually helps the creative process. Why?  Well, as rational creatures we need to make sense (to some degree) of anything in order for the creative process to flourish.  A perfect example is: the world of education.  Education or training must happen prior to any innovation.  Now, how little or how much education to acquire and at what cost, is really up to the individual's current desires, future aspirations, and natural abilities.   This same happens in the world of guitar playing.  Fortunately, that world can be very clear to perceive.  How do we perceive it?  In our FRETBOARD.

There is no mystery here!  The fretboard has the answers that can lead us to composing, or simply interpreting great music.  Getting to know the fretboard is a lifelong process.  It's perpetual!  That is precisely why some of the guitar exercises we all practice are called perpetual studies.  So, is it worth getting to know our fretboard: absolutely!  However, the question that we must all answer (sometimes seeking pro help is useful) is, how much do we need to know.  A lot of times the idea of how much is not up to us.  More on this last concept in a later post.
