Just about 12 years ago when I took my very first music business class, the industry was a centralized organization of power! The main functions of any record deal were: production, promotion, pressing/manufacturing, and distribution.
What made the indie artist really get the short end of the stick back then? Well, the fact that in order to produce, promote, press (manufacture), and distribute, you needed a lot of capital. Thus, the advances, the recouping, etc. The record company game...!
Today, with production costs being so inexpensive, the industry has really turned around. Or how some like to say: the tables have turned. Where should your focus be as an independent artist? How to maximize your sales?
This is a two-fold process. First, the focus should be the same as always: reaching the masses through a viable distribution channel. Then, where should your money go to make the distribution work efficiently?
Well, first on distribution. There are several ways in which to do this and really acquire quality, digital distribution world wide (web-wise)!
Check out TuneCore...a company that specialized for several years now in providing distribution to indies. They provide all the releasing and distribution services any artist would ever need in order to start getting web and non-web notoriety.

Keep in mind that just because the production, pressing, and distribution factors have become accessible and efficient for the indie, the cost of promotion in attempting to reach the masses is still a huge item on the list. Therefore, besides perfecting your artist craft and releasing music, make sure your funds are used wisely in the promoting you do!
More on this of promotion on a later post :)
