Much of the composition time happens either with an instrument in hand or a note pad. Now, a very useful technique that may of the most successful songwriters have used has been to talk about their music. Much of the music we hear and categorize as successful (either mainstream or not), has gone through several filters and levels of critique.
Therefore, take advantage of the music community in your area. How? Make sure you are letting others critique your art. Do not keep it to yourself! Any publicity is good publicity, especially if it's coming from colleagues. Do not be afraid of the interaction, the opinions, the criticism, or whatever it may be.
Think of this question:
Would you have rather kept your music unknown and left alone in your hard drive? I think not!
Therefore do exactly the opposite. Make your music stand on its own 2 feet. Let the composition survive on its own and show you what it is made of!!!
