A common problem for the beginning jazz guitar player is the issue of "swing."
This becomes second nature and even simpler than you think after you learn it. However, before actually knowing the why behind the what, it is a well kept secret!
Usually, jazz rhythm swings. However, how can you tell if the tune is to felt in swing time and also, how do you achieve this?
Step 1 - You take a look at the rhythmic description on the top portion of the song. It should say: "swing" somewhere (as opposed to "straight" feel).
Step 2 - Interpret the common "1 and" count that you give 2 eight notes that begin on ANY beat as a "triplet" with the middle eight silent. In simple terms, the "1 and, 2 and, 3 and, 4 and" count you would do on a straight rock song for example, will get the "dotted eight, sixteenth" feel.
In summary, a set of 2 eight that are equal to 1 full beat, will get subdivided as the first eight totaling 75% of the beat, and the other eight note totaling the rest of the beat or 25%!
Who said you could not use percentages in music?!
