Here is a quick reference for building chords on the middle 4 strings just by using intervals.
First, let's look at the major 7th chord construction as our example:
root -- 5th -- 7th -- 3rd....this is the relationship of the note sequence
Now in order to make ANY major 7th chord without thinking of the actual notes just think of these 4 notes need as 4 notes that are being separated by 3 interval spaces.
Here are the steps:
1. From the root to the 5th you have a P5 or "perfect fifth"
2. From the 5th to the 7th you have a M3 or "major third"
3. From the 7th to the 3rd you have a P4 or "perfect fourth"
The beauty of this is that even IF YOU DON'T KNOW the notes on a G#maj7 chord, you can simply go to G# by finding it on the fretboard and follow the intervals on steps 1 through 3!!!
You can do this operation with any chord quality by simply increasing/decreasing half/full steps as needed.
The important thing is to know your "math" on the fretboard. By "math" we mean "intervals".
Have fun :)
